Montessori Method

Montessori Method

The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood.

The four basic tenets of a Montessori method and education are the same today as they were over 100 years ago. In an ever-changing world, the Montessori theory of education and the Montessori learning materials remain the same. Marlboro Montessori Academy is one of the premier Montessori schools abiding by the authentic Montessori principles of education.

The whole child approach is the primary goal of all Montessori programs. The Montessori Method encourages children to reach their fullest potential in life as they promote the development of social skills, emotional growth, physical coordination and cognitive preparation. The Montessori curriculum and the prepared environment empower children to ignite their creativity, build a strong sense of self, and to feel all the excitement of their accomplishments.

Montessori Classroom

The prepared environment is essential to the success of the Montessori Method. Each classroom is carefully designed to ignite a child's natural desire to learn through exploration and discovery. Our classrooms are spacious, bright, and colorfully appointed with learning activities. Montessori materials are placed on open shelves, which are available for the children to freely choose during work time.

Group activities take place on the carpeted area at designated times of the day. The children take care of the environment and have respect for all things and people who are part of their classroom community.

Hands-On Learning

The Montessori learning materials are essential to the Montessori theory of education. The materials were designed with specific skills in mind. Some materials can be used for multi-levels of difficulty. They take the children from "hands-on" learning experiences of touch, hear, smell, see, and taste to more abstract thinking. This multi-sensory approach has already proven to be a very effective teaching technique. Montessori schools on every continent in the world use basically the same learning materials.

Multi-Sensorial Approach

Like no other, the Montessori math curriculum provides excellent learning experiences using a multi-sensory approach. This method provides a strong foundation for understanding the abstractness of math. From sandpaper numbers to the dynamic lessons of the functions of math, Montessori students gain extraordinary mathematical skills as they grasp understanding of number concepts.

Math Material

Math materials provide manipulation of beads, chains, counters, rods, and cards. Children can explore and discover math principles as they prepare to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The basic components of the decimal system are presented as early as the preschool level. Children can actually see and feel the differences between the unit bead, the ten bar, the hundred square, and the thousand cube.

Sensitive Periods Of Learning

At the Marlboro Montessori Academy, we recognize that learning occurs in defined stages. We refer to these stages as the "sensitive periods of learning." Maria Montessori observed that children learn best during "sensitive periods" when they are deeply interested and highly motivated to learn a particular skill. During these "windows of opportunity", our Montessori teachers know when and what lessons to give each child.
