The Sensorial Curriculum provides the children opportunities to refine skills of the senses by discriminating shapes, colors, textures, sounds, temperatures, patterns, size and form. They learn to explore by “trial and error” and to further understand all impressions they encounter.
Common to this curriculum, but not limited to, are the pink tower, brown stairs, red rods, cylinder blocks, constructive triangle boxes, geometric cabinet, and color boxes. As the children master the basic sensorial lessons, they enjoy the challenge of combining many of the Sensorial materials to create extensions of interesting designs. The red rods soon become a maze that they create and carefully walk through with their shoes off. Developing coordination, patience, and a keener awareness of differences and similarities, are among the benefits of the sensorial materials.
